Every business needs to put up with government regulation and interference. Things like licensing, taxes, documentation, record keeping…ect. But some are put out of business because of “program” changes. Oregon’s Department of Fish & Wildlife (ODFW) have really put the hurts on the commercial and recreation fishing industries. Last year’s Spring Chinook Salmon was a very good run loaded with thousands of fish. But the season was closed mid-season.

This year was even better, but the sportsmen were only allowed to fish 3 days per week for 6 weeks, but the salmon only showed up the last 3 weeks. Not good for business.

A vice president of Joe’s Sports, recently testified before a State Senate hearing on selective commercial Salmon harvesting. He stated the the ODFW is partially responsible for their bankruptcy. “The season is only announced a month before it starts, and then you shut it down mid-season. How are we suppose to order stock under those conditions?”

A some Fishing guides have given it up. You will find their boats and gear on Craig’s List. They just can’t make a living when they need a $25,000 boat, $40,000 truck, $3,000 - $5,000 worth of equipment and are only allowed to fish for 9 days.

The recreation fishing industry brings $750 Million to Oregon each year through licensing, boat sales, air travel, tackle sales, restaurants, gasoline, hotels and guide fees. Damaging this industry is no small thing to our local economy

Many tourists visit Oregon each year and many of them want to go fishing during their stay. Some are planning to pass up Oregon because of the uncertainty of the fishing opportunities.

We need to tell the politicians to stop “Helping” since Oregon’s unemployment is over 12%, second highest in the country. What do you think?
